SPHL 2015 Expansion Draft

The South Professional Hockey League had their expansion draft last night for their new team, the Macon Mayhem. Each team had to provide a protected list to the league, and Macon would select from the players not protected. The protected players were:

Columbus – Matt Gingera, Nielsson Arcibal, Shawn Bates, Craig Simchuk, Patrick McCadden, Kyle Thomas, Louis Belisle, Kyle Johnson, Tyler MacPherson, Andy Willigar, Ben O’Quinn, Nick Curry, Shannon Szabados

Fayetteville – Matt Robertson, Trever Hertz, Derek Elliott, Corey Tamblyn, Jan Safar, Austin Daae, John Clewlow, Mike Kavanagh, Josh McQuade, Brad Drobot, Zach Carriveau, Kevin Murdock, Sean Bonar

Macon selected Steve Bergin (Pensacola), Jason Cohen (Peoria), Mark Corbett (Knoxville), John McLean (Pensacola), Ryan Salvis (Knoxville) and Matt Whitehead (Mississippi).

 

Steve Bergin is a 27-year-old defenseman who recorded 25 points in 56 games last year. He had the best +/- in the SPHL last year (28), and is a two-time champion (2013 and 2014).

Jason Cohen is a 26-year-old defenseman who recorded 15 points in 32 games this year with Peoria and 13 in 19 with Louisiana.

Mark Corbett is a 24-year-old defenseman who recorded 1 point in 3 games with Mississippi and 4 points in 7 games with Knoxville. Corbett won the championship with Knoxville this year. This is his 1st year in the SPHL.

John McLean is a 25-year-old goalie who held a 3.54 GAA and a .895 SV% in 3 games this year. This is his 1st year in the SPHL.

Ryan Salvis is a 30-year-old C/D who is a long-time SPHL vet. He recorded 57 points in 54 games this year and has served as the Captain of the Pensacola Ice Flyers. His career highlights include the 2012-13 ALL-SPHL First Team, the 2014-15 ALL-SPHL Second Team, had the most assists in the SPHL in 2014-15 (45) and was the SPHL Champion 3 times (2013, 2014 and 2015).

Matt Whitehead is also a long time SPHL vet. The 30-year-old forward recorded 56 points in 56 games while serving as the Mississippi Riverkings Assistant Captain this year. He was on the 2012-13 All-SPHL Second Team and the 2014-15 SPHL First All-Star Team.
