Phaneuf to Redwings still a possibility?
There is a report out that the “Phaneuf to the Red Wings” banter is expected to pick back up again in the offseason. This has me on the fence. Phaneuf is still a solid player, just not in the correct position for his style of play. He needs to have a solid two-way player beside him. Like an Enstrom to a Byfuglien. Could Kronwall be that player? No. But Dekeyser could become that type of player. If the price is right, it is a good move. Ken Holland is a smart GM and will take his time on this one.
Young Standout Goaltenders
How much faith should you in a standout young goalie like Hammond or Hutchinson? Personally, I say very little. Still a lot to prove. We have seen many goaltenders do this in the past and fall off the side of the earth. Anyone remember Hackett? Bachman? Poulin? Nilsson? Pogge? Am I saying they won’t be good? No. Just keep your distance and watch. Never put full faith in them until they have played enough games to prove themselves.
This could be the tightest race we have ever seen for the Calder Trophy. Forsberg, Gaudreau and Ekblad have all been making solid arguments. Personally I want to give it to Gaudreau or Ekblad if their teams make the playoffs. Both have been one of only a handful of reasons why their teams are even in the playoff hunt. However it is hard to argue Forsberg’s numbers.
Fewer points a good thing?
For the first time in years, it looks like we will not have a 100 point player (unless someone pulls a McDavid in the NHL). Some people are upset about this fact, but I am happy with it for this season. Having a season like this is fun. The distance between teams is smaller than it ever has been. That being said, I hope to see multiple 100 point players next season.
2015 Draft a Rebuild Goldmine
Never before have we seen a draft where a team can, in one draft, fix their future. The top players are unreal but the 2nd round has players who would be 1st round in another draft. OHL 1st round picks like Mitchell Vande Sompel are talked about going 3rd round. With 14 first round picks owned by 7 teams, this draft will be an exciting one.
