The Daily Mumble – 14/12/14
Hello again readers! The return of League It To Us is upon us, which also means the return of The Daily Mumble.
The Las Vegas Black Knights will be a hit
You heard it here first. We are not saying it is happening, but if it was to happen as rumoured, it would be huge. More and more NHL Fans are cheering for the underdogs nowadays and who could be more of an underdog than a brand new team? The Black Knights is a fantastic brand, especially for Monty Python fans. The team also may have to change the city slogan, so their wins won’t stay in Las Vegas. I also believe new teams would be great for the league. So many players deserving of top 6 spots or even regular NHL spots are left in the minors or on the sidelines. This will provide a great opportunity for them. It may also allow the NHL to attract more overseas players.
The Race for the Top 5 spots in 2015 Draft is closer than believed
Believe it or not, McDavid is not a “lock” at #1. Is it likely for someone to pass him? No. However there are a number of players right now that are forcing their way up the ranks. Dylan Strome, McDavid’s teammate has been phenomenal. Pavel Zacha is really picking up his game. Jack Eichel has been fantastic in the NCAA. Oliver Kylington is also a great player. Many love Noah Hanifin as well. With us only being half way through the season, others may also pop up along the way. Mitchell Marner has been killing it with the Knights, as is Nathan Noel for the Saint John Ice Dogs. You can’t lose with a top 5 pick this year. This may be another situation where there are tough decisions, like Barkov over Drouin, or Larsson dropping to 4th etc.
Christian Dvorak looking like a steal
Already “steal” is becoming a popular word for many 2014 draftees, but I’m going to point out just one today. Christian Dvorak plays for the London Knights of the OHL and was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2nd round, 58th overall last year. He dropped due to a shortened season from a broken leg. In that shortened season, Dvorak scored 6-8-14 in 33 games for his 1st season with the Knights. Since being drafted, Dvorak has 21-29-50 in 29 games for the Knights. Dvorak is a finesse player who has great speed and skill. He could make a fantastic NHL player in the future.
Silent Hero, Nick Foligno
Nick Foligno has been silently giving the Blue Jackets hope. Although the Jackets sit in 14th place in their conference, they have now won 6 in a row and are starting to turn things around. A boatload of injuries cost them a good start to the season but some of those players have begun to return and more are on the way to help the Jackets get back into the race. We have seen them do it before, so don’t count them out. Currently they are only 6 points out of 8th place. A big reason for this has been Nick Foligno who has stepped up in the absence of his teammates. He has recorded 14-13-27 in 28 games for the Jackets this season.
It is amazing to see a coach be so good that there is actually a watch for him by not just Red Wings fans, but all of the NHL. The Leaf fans are licking their lips as the countdown continues. Whatever decision he will make, it won’t be an easy one, so it will take time. He has been the coach for the Red Wings for a long time, so leaving will be hard. Not just because he has now lived there for so long, but because he has worked with men like recently re-signed GM Ken Holland for so long. The Red Wings team isn’t making the decision any easier as they have been remarkable this season and are tied with the Lightning for first in the Atlantic division and are also just one point behind the Penguins for first in the East. Whatever decision he will make, it will be last minute and won’t be till when the season is over.
