The 2014 OHL Priority Draft is not until tomorrow, but that did not stop the Sarnia Sting from announcing their 1st overall selection today. jakob7

The Sarnia Sting will be picking defenceman Jakob Chychrun with the 1st overall pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Draft.

Chychrun spent this season playing for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the GTMMHL. In 29 games, he recorded 16 goals and 43 points for the Canadiens as well as 13 points in their 14 playoff games. He also recorded 4 points in 5 games while playing for Team Ontario in the U17 World Championships.

This 16 year old defenceman will go into the OHL already with all the size he needs as he is currently 6 foot 2, 194 pounds. Chychrun is extremely skilled as a whole. He will play physical, score, and will be solid defensively. An easy comparison for Chychrun would be Barrie Colts defenceman and potential NHL 1st overall pick Aaron Ekblad.

Chychrun will be joining a struggling Sarnia Sting team. Sarnia has a history of producing NHL 1st overall picks with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos and Edmonton Oilers forward Nail Yakupov. They also produced 3rd overall pick, and current Montreal Canadien, Alex Galchenyuk.

Because he will be chosen 1st overall, Jakob Chychrun will recieve the Jack Ferguson Award. The Jack Ferguson Award is an annual award presented to each year’s 1st overall pick.
